November 2016 Knockout of the Month: Rachel

rachelfWe are so excited to announce that Rachel is our November KO of the Month! She has been a Knockout for 7 months and we are so glad she found our club! She walks in with a smile and always works hard.  She has already made so much progress in her boxing skills after just 7 months and we are excited to watch her continue to progress.  Rachel is a teacher by day and Knockout by night.  We love watching her focus in class and commit to getting the skills and movements right! Fitness has always been an important part of my life. Since I was young, I trained as a dancer. I took countless dance classes, attended workshops, competed, and performed in many venues. My ambition was to become a professional dancer. I started training seriously with professional companies in high school, only to find that they don't hire girls who look like me (5'3" and curvy). I decided to train anyway and attended college as a dance major. In college, I learned that the best dancers cross trained and therefore started learning more about cardio and strength training. I only stuck with the dance program for one year after they repeatedly told me I would never amount to anything. It was hard to have my self esteem torn apart like that. I continued to dance as a minor while I studied education as my major. Once I wasn't so focused on dance as a degree, I found other outlets to explore fitness. I started going to the gym and working out on a regular basis and not just for class credit. I learned that the more I did, the better I felt about myself physically and mentally.

However, after the college years, I began to have a difficult time finding motivation to work out. As I looked around the gym I found I was constantly comparing myself to others and not focusing on my fitness goals. I cancelled my gym membership and began to work out in the comfort of my own home. It was great! I could work out whenever I wanted and nobody was looking at or judging me. The problem with that was, it was hard to push myself and I found I wasn't making as much progress.

My dad is an avid boxer and invited me to attend a boxing class with him about 7 months ago. I didn't think I would like it, but I attend anyway. It was the best experience I ever had (until KO that is). I immediately came home and searched for boxing gyms in my area and KO was the only one to come up. I'll admit that I was a little nervous to go to my first class, but it forever changed the way I see fitness and myself. Since the moment I walked in the door I have never looked back. Everyone is there for the same reason and the amount of empowerment provided by fellow KO's and coaches is amazing. My mentality around fitness and what being strong and healthy is completely changed. I now work out for me and my own well being. When I am at KO, I know it's a safe place where I am never judged, but instead encouraged to be the best form of myself possible. I am excited to see what the future holds for me as I continue my fitness and health journey as a KO!
